Need For Speed Meets Wii Controls

Electronic Arts introduces a port of Need for Speed Carbon to the Wii with some very intuitive and responsive controls.

This installment of the ever popular EA franchise takes place in Carbon Canyon.  Racers vie for control of territory. A few things have been added to this game over last years Most Wanted, the graphics are good but now mind blowing, but we're going to skip right ahead to the most important part to Wii games, the controls.  With NFS Carbon you have an option of 5 control schemes.  You have the now standard racing position with the Wii Remote in the classic NES position, then you have a few iterations of the two controller setup. 1, you use the nunchuk's joystick for controls and there are two different angles that you can set to tilt the Wii remote forward for gas and pull back for brake, the second is you use the nunchuk tilt left and right to turn and tilt the wii remote forward for gas and back for breaks.

Personally we prefer the "classic" style.  All in all the controls take some getting used to , but once you are used to them they are extremely responsive.  The one thing truly lacking in this title that NFS fans have come to love is the extreme cop chases.  Although still present, the cop chases aren't as regular.  You can actually get through the entire game with minimal cop encounters.

Our biggest gripe, however, was the showing of a lazy effort of porting the menu controls over.  While the menus use an on screen cursor, it doesn't use the IR of the wii remote.  You have to use the D-pad to move an onscreen cursor.  And even more lackluster of this menu port, although you may race the game with the controller turned on its side, you will have to revert back to the "pointing at the screen" position to navigate the screens.  Why EA didn't take the time to address these problems ,we don't know.. but over all, if you are an NFS fan you should not be dissappointed with this borderline great game.
